Satyajit Varekar
Satyajeet Varekar, an artist from Sangli, creates art to highlight the lives of various tribes and communities in specific regions. His renowned series, Fish-O-Mania, showcases the everyday life of fishing communities, illustrating their business activities, whether trading, negotiating, or advocating for their rights and survival. He is particularly captivated by depicting fisherwomen, their vibrant clothing, their postures and stances during daily tasks, and their strong personalities, as they work alongside men, supporting them in their trade.
A graduate of KalaVishwa MahaVidhyalay, Sangli, Satyajeet portrays his subjects with authenticity, using bold strokes of bright and vivid colors interspersed with muted greys. He draws significant inspiration from the teachings of the esteemed G.S Majgaonkar and M.R. Deshmukh, legendary artists from Kolhapur. His paintings convey a deep sense of cultural connection and vividly portray people in their natural environments. In his work, landscapes serve primarily to complement the subjects and their activities. Figures are central in his compositions, yet he believes their stories would be incomplete without the geographical context of their surroundings. Landscapes thus form the foundation supporting his characters' narratives. His brushwork effortlessly conveys his ideas on canvas, highlighting both bold and subtle traits in harmony.
